Back from Italy(sadly)! The last eight days were amazing. I was lucky enough to tag along to Italy with my family. My great-grandfather, Earl Remmel, died in the town of Ronzo di Chienis during WWII. The story we always knew was that after his plane was damaged after a bombing, Earl and his co-pilot, Leslie Speer, kept the plane steady long enough for his crew to bail before crashing into a mountain. Turns out they saved more than the lives of their crew, they ended up saving the community of Ronzo di Chienis. Earl and Leslie decided not to release the bombs over the town while trying to maintain altitude. We went to Ronzo di Chienis to visit the crash site, be there for the book release and go to the memorial. It was great meeting so many residents of Ronzo, even some who were alive when the wreck happened. Mima became quite the celebrity, with everyone wanting to talk to her and tell their stories and asking for her autograph. It felt strange when I was asked to sign someones book. After that I made sure to keep my camera up in front of my face before anyone else could ask.
Big thanks to Ben Appleby, Aldo Miorelli, Giacomo Zanetti, Antonella Previdi for everything. It was a trip we will never forget. This was Tammy's, my mom's and my first trip to Italy so we also visited Cinque Terre, Florence, San Gimignano and Venice. I think I was in a food coma by the end of the week. Or maybe a wine coma. Probably both. Time to start saving up so I can go back! |
